Water and organic solvent extracts from Perilla frutescens evaluated on cytotoxic effect to 3T3 fibroblast and anti-tumor activity to melanoma cell. The results were as follows: 1. The cytotoxicity to 3T3 fibroblast was significant in water and ether extracts, the antitumor effect to melanoma cell was significant in all extracts. Methanol, ethylacetate and ethanol extracts were weak cytotoxic effect, but was strong anti-tumor activity. 2. In the MTT quantity to 3T3 fibroblast, ether, water, chloroform and ethanol extracts decrease significantly, and all extracts decrease significant to melanoma cell, the difference of MTT quantity between 3T3 fibroblast and melanloma cell was excellent in methanol and ethanol extracts. 3. Morphological differences of cell and formazan crystal were critical in methanol and ethanol extracts. 4. By dose response of cell number and MTT quantity, growth inhibition effect of melanoma cell was detected the strongest in methanol and ethylacetate extracts. These results indicated that methanol extracts possessed low cytotoxicity and strong anti-tumor activity.
